music stuff

I went to a band concert yesterday. I sat in the upper right corner of the audience. Yup. Camp. Totally subconscious thought, but with a band performing, I certainly can't sit in the rest of the auditorium, right? I have to get up and playyy... or not. It's just ingrained in me.

The first band reminded me of Concert Band from MYS. Really good, but simple songs. Some intonation issues in the trumpets. Small. And foot tapping. Haha, it was almost as if the entire band lifted five inches off the floor every beat. The setup was interesting. Flutes in the front row, then clarinets and double reeds in the second. Tuning started with the tuba and worked it's way up in octave through the band, ending with the flutes. The second band was more like Symphonic Band from MYS. Big, incredibly good, and playing more symphonic pieces and intense stuff but still having a lot of fun. More like an orchestra in that people didn't just walk in during a song, and the set up was more like a band. Clarinets on the left, flutes on the right (looking at the stage).

Watching it made me miss Dr Richards. ...and then Mrs McCormick. *sigh*

But it was good, and I'm really glad I went. I didn't realize that OSU had such good (or big) bands that weren't marching.

Then to top it off, the Symphonic Band played Stars and Stripes to end the concert. I half expected a giant flag to rise from behind the percussion.
Then outside, I got that bittersweet sensation of camp-is-over. Apparently YMA isn't just a part of my past or my summers, it's a part of my life.

It's interesting too, I told my CAPS counselor how much I saved for that camp every year I went and how much I looked forward to it every year. Just a small 2 weeks out of the summer, but I spend the entire year for the last eight years thinking about it. She put it in terms that I hadn't thought about and that is how much priority and effort I put into going to YMA every year.

hug!

i even have a bit of yma nostalgia ... i mean, for you. i love going and i love being there, even though it's not my camp.

i have loads of sdl-nostalgia moments, though. i'd really like to go back...

and i know exaclty what you mean about mrs. mccormick. i think of her every time i do anything orchestra/band related. crazy how one person can have so much influence in your life, eh?

and btw, i love how much of a musician you are. noting how they tune and set up the stage and tap their feet! haha. only an ensemble musician would notice those things so acutely. :)

i don't love playing in band, but symphonic band was incredible, and i enjoy listening to a good band. for a little while, ya know. :)
